Something that happens because of something else. It's what you see or feel after something causes it.

for example

After the big storm, the effect was a yard full of broken branches and fallen trees.

If you drop a glass and it shatters, the broken pieces are the effect of the drop. Why do we call the broken pieces the effect? Because they wouldn’t be there if the glass hadn’t fallen.
